The “technical campaign” addresses a well-documented weakness in the rear wheel flange where the brake rotor attaches. Overzealous tightening of the brake rotor or wheel bolts can crack the hub and cause catastrophic failure. That’s bad.
The recall…. er, I mean campaign involves all R and K bikes with production dates between November 2003 and April 2011. This includes the popular R1200GS as well as R1200R (above), R1200RT, K1200GT, K1200S and others.
The company contends this only happens due to improper maintenance techniques. However, as a precaution BMW will replace the rear hubs on these motorcycles with “a more robust unit.” Owners will be contacted about having the work done and there is no charge.
